Post Malone "F-1 Trillion: Long Bed" (2024)


A year on from a toned down yet catchy Austin, Post Malone returns with passion, plunging gracefully into another love of his, Country music. Surprising to no one who knows of his passions, F-1 Trillion's shock and awe lies in authenticity. Bringing on a star studded cast of heavyweight producers, seasoned musicians and huge Country artists, a bright, cheery set of songs built for southern blue collar American life.

Pulling no surprises, themes of love and heartbreak, work and drive, booze and blues play out in typical fashion. Post's unique voice croons a snug fit for these glossy instrumentals, his soft wobble breezy and charming as ever. The music flows sweetly, rich, fleshed tunes layered with steel guitar, piano, strings and occasional harmonica.

Given my casual love of the Country mood, this hour flows like an easy day traveling in the sun. Great to ease the mind and keep things simple. Practically every song features a big name, including legends Dolly Parton and Hank Williams among plenty of younger names. With a large cast of songs, only California Sober leaps of the playlist with its powerful hook and lively instrumental venturing into Southern Rock.

Disc two, the Long Bed, adds nine additional tracks with Post going at it alone. These songs simply extend the mood, feeling like there is room for additional voices yet he holds out well on his own, well worth a listen. F-1 Trillion was about bringing the best musicians together to make a stellar country album. With such brilliant composing, its hard to imagine he alone is orchestrating such warm, cozy music. Thus I'm left with a sense that Post is a guest to his own show, which has created a fantastic record.

My Top 10 Albums Of 2023

Listening habits have changed, I've put more time into creating and as a result, my shortlist was literally these ten albums. I've passed over quite a few records from old favorites too, instead opting to keep an eye on newer artists but even then its familiar names emerging on the list this year.

(10) Aaron Cherof "Minecraft: Trails & Tales (Original Game Soundtrack)" (2023) link
The fallout with C418's timeless soundtrack is saddening but in his shadow, Mojang have managed to pluck some exceptional artists that suit the games atmosphere. This latest addition grows on me with each listen and as the year grew, each return to these new tracks proved how great they were.

(9) Dreamstate Logic "Starbound" (2023) link

One for the temporal playlist, Starbound has a flavor not all distinctive but lasting. As the year went on I found myself drifting back to its magic which turns out to be one of the strongest calmers in Dreamstate Logic's now extensive catalog.

(8) The Tiberian Sons "Anthems Of Liberation" (2023) link

Soundtrack to my ice boat racing, I may now never return to it without visions of skidding across frozen blocky landscapes. The musics tone is familiar but wonderfully animated, that crossover between Progressive and VGM again yielding magic. Its nice to see this group branching into their other soundtrack passions.

(7) Enter Shikari "A Kiss For The Whole World" (2023) link

I commented earlier on passing over old bands still pumping out records. Now twenty years into their legacy, Enter Shikari are one I can't pass up and I'm happy to see them find that youthful spirit again after experimenting with a more subdued approach.

(6) Post Malone "Austin" (2023) link

Its not here for its status as an album but the few favorites that emerged from Austin have been absolute ear worms, bringing hot and uplift over and over. Post has always been a keen talent but here you can hear him actualizing the vision of a songs expression and backing it up with melodic candy.

(5) Gunship "Unicorn" (2023) link

Clearly brilliant but trailing off towards its conclusion, the strong songs of Unicorn has again been ear worms. With Spotify's auto shuffle pushing them after finishing other records, they have become favorites this year. It feels like they really timed this one well, waiting for inspiration to strike after a few years.

(4) Old Tower "Draconic Synthesis" (2023) link

Dungeon Synth has become somewhat stale with my explorations of what its got left to offer. I keep eyes on a few artists and really felt that Old Tower stepped up with another maturity of sound design that yielded some fresh other worldly expressions.

(3) Myrkur "Spine" (2023) link

The uncanny feeling covers has subsided given some research into the musics originality and now I've just been enjoying how curiously strange and wonderful its chemistry is. Bruun is clearly pulling inspiration from different genres and how it all comes together has been endearing and a joy to listen.

(2) Narrow Head "Moments Of Clarity" (2023) link

With nostalgia being on plentiful supply in these times, its great to hear a band so masterfully craft inspirations of times past with a spirit and charisma that escapes that nostalgic grasp. Narrow Head have banging riffs and write songs that don't serve the past but compliment it. Everything came together so well with Moments Of Clarity. Many of its songs have been on rotation through the year.

(1) Olivia Rodrigo "Guts" (2023) link

Often singing about topics quite distant from my own experiences, Olivia's presence, expression and musicality has an allure hard to ignore. Like with Sour, she can pull you in with catchy pop chorus and sincere divulges of personal distresses that paint a picture. This outing, everything felt tightened up and finely tuned, while maturing lyrically too. Guts has me enjoying her catalog while anticipating where she will go next!

Post Malone "Austin" (2023)

 

Returning swiftly from the lukewarm reception of Twelve Carat Toothache, Post Malone returns with a notable progression in his persona and musical identity. Austin, named after himself, is a traditional leaning Pop record that initially disappoints with its generic withdrawal from what made him standout as an artist. Flushing out percussive Trap influences and stepping back from the embellishment auto-tune offered, this new direction withdraws into pleasing practices and sensibilities established for years now.

With a lack of aesthetic novelty to draw one in, Its with repetitions that one gets to know these songs. Humble and sincere, Post revels in his emotions with an authenticity complimented by his voice. Ditching auto-tune for the most part, merits emerge in his singing that prove this talent is beyond gimmicks. The melodic lines and catchy lyrics are illuminating when they land. Backed by subtle swooning instrumentals, the union lands songs sweetly when the stars align.

With less hands involved in the records production, the trio emerge with a cohesive vision pulling on a little kick clap of coffee shop Rock, the shimmer 80s Synthpop and dreamy touch of modern Pop. Compositions are apt, purpose built, across a range of tones all lavished in gorgeous aesthetics. Its builds a summery indulgence of warmth and good times masking an underbelly of sunset reflections on masked pains.

Brushing aside the false start of the self-pity opener Don't Understand and yearning Gospel cries of Something Real, an arc emerges from upbeat to introspective. Early on the best tracks arrive on pacey percussion tempos and cool breezes. As the record matures, the calmer acoustic leaning expressions steadily shift its focus. Its a decent trajectory but given only a handful of songs really pulled this listener in.

I found Austin's lulls to highlight how well its uplifting choruses landed. Early on, every other song croons and grooves on its slick impressions. As moodier acoustics roll in, mediocrity rises. Curation is often a pitfall on lengthy records. At an hour long, its clear a concise expression of Post's warmth would have rocked strong. The reveling on melancholic vibes didn't land with the same infectiousness. This could of been something special but its retained to a handful of songs that stand apart.

Post Malone "Twelve Carat Toothache" (2022)

 

Its all to easy to over-analyze, dissect and buy into ones own critical thought. As one of popular musics most illuminated figures, Post Malone's music arrives through a lens of impact and relevance. This initially soured my experience. With a lack of obvious growth, new dimension or creative streak to latch onto, it seemed Twelve Carat Toothache was a firm disappointment. Post's unique vocal manipulation, now fine tuned to a peak, the day-dreaming instrumental glow and trendy hi-hat shuffling Trap inspired beats routine to a fault. It all seemed like a safe bet at first glance.

I'm glad I stuck with it. Some records just take a few extra spins to get going, ya know? I've now found the soundtrack to my summer. Its lyrical struggles deal with the double edged sword of fame, the ills of alcohol and mental health battles with his musical creativity. Despite this, glossy overtones and breezy reverbs stream a wealth of warm, thick melodies, track after track. Whenever an attentive glance gives thought to his embattled words, a darker tone is felt. Only on a couple of instrumentals do they manifest through tension and soft dreariness in mood. Otherwise, a sunny record.

The poor response from journalists seems warranted. A flawed record, forged in a thickle moment for Post. Despite this, its presence holds. This string of songs has an ambience, it holds its slick smoothness gracefully, the brightest of hooks bursting out between plenty of interlude paced moments. He still has his knack, its just used sparingly. Not a jam packed set of songs but its pacing works in a casual way.

Nestled right at the end is an absolute banger. The Weeknd once again features and brings the 80s Synthwave inspired aesthetic along for the ride. He frequently provides great songs to other artists and must be killing it with this approach of on-boarding listeners to your sound through features. Anyways, final thoughts? Its a mixed record in terms of what lands. Its percussion-less songs often a weaker cut yet its glossy tone and warm dreamy mood lets it drift by with an ease I can get onboard with.

Post Malone "Hollywood's Bleeding" (2019)


His previous efforts Stoney and Beerbongs & Bentleys showcased the young artists unique voice and songwriting ability but the best came in fractions. This time around Post and his crew have elevated their game. After a handful of thoroughly enjoyable listens I initially turned to the credits, expectant of new names in production and song writing. There is a couple, however its the same core of people turning up the quality in all the places that fell short the last time around. It's a noticeable ten or so minutes shorter and perhaps that played a part in its fluidity but the reality is the instrumentation here is of a higher fidelity and its got a warm fussy atmosphere to it.

As the songs stroll from one to the next there is often something bright and punchy at work. Either the bold basslines, snappy percussion or glossy guitars illuminate alongside Post's voice. This can be heard best on the Pop leaning songs because of course he has an eclectic taste which has subtle flourishes as the music sways across the spectrum. When delving into the Hip Hop avenue Post brings a plethora of guests to spice up the vocal variety as lyrically he is pegged into to his usual themes. Between that and Pop it is mostly the classic singer songwriter vibes and acoustic guitars that dazzle however he shows his roots in Rock on a fantastic collaboration.

Teaming up with Travis Scott, the voice of Ozzy Osbourne engrosses one again on Take What You Want. The Trap Pop song brings his iconic voice to a new generation and ends with a stunning crescendo reviving those classic Randy Rhodes leads. Possibly the best moment on the record however Post really comes to life with his infectious hooks and singing. We saw it in glimpses the last two records but here it feels like every other song has him deploying some sort of ear worm to get you singing along. These songs dig in the way good Pop songs do.

Where the album falls short though is again with Malone himself. The lyrics are much to be desired, especially when he works in his rap mode. They are mostly the over inflated feelings of relationship problems articulated through loose profanities, often circling the emotion with little reflection or introspection to make the words interesting. Its knee deep and thus tends to drift out of focus and that is where the glossy production and good instrumentation picks up the slack. This is a huge step forward for the young artists and Its been a blast seeing him get here. Hollywood's Bleeding will most likely pick up some awards this year!

Post Malone "Beerbongs & Bentleys" (2018)


Debuting at number one and going platinum within a week it would seem the success is only growing for the young artist who is yet to win favor with a majority of critics. Beerbongs & Bentleys is Post Malone's Sophomore record clocking in at a bloated sixty four minutes that shows little signs of any measurable evolution from his sound on Stoney. Across these eighteen tracks we have a similar of sequence of Trap influenced Hip Hop beats mixed up in the wish wash of indulgent reverberations and instruments set to maximize the laid back vibes and chilled out tone of Post's music.

The record falls short in its lyrical substance, most tracks are dominated by superficial topics. The gloating and boasting of lifestyle and wealth props up a thin backbone of topics revolving around the glorification of intoxication, petty drama and partying that are so atypical of the youth and who could blame them for it? As an older soul there is little I can relate to other than a reactionary sigh at seeing reflections of a former, younger self. Post does at times find some deep lines in brief glimpses but its mostly buried in the slew of style and catchy slang over substance in lyrics that many of his guest features indulge in too.

Its all so trendy and such are the instrumentals too. The charisma of Post's singing voice, with auto tune or without is a constant pleasure and transformers the mood of these beats into chilled out, laid back places, calming and serine through the chaos of the stuttering hi-hat led beats. The quality varies track to track, Same Bitches with YG sticking out like a sore thumb, its beat clearly by a different producer working on those west coast vibes. A couple of songs like Rockstar with 21 Savage hit the right mark however Post's songwriting sounds rather muted across the record as the trendy beats and self-indulgent lyrics dominate the records tone and posture.

In one moment we get a pure beam of light, the main reason I have my ear on this artist. Stay is a glossy, gleaming song filled with sun soaked acoustic guitar playing, coming on like a daydream as Post's voice soars over blissfully with some beautiful singing and vocal inflections. No Trap beats, no trendy slang and this is where the substance is in this musician. I hope in the future he follows this path more as I believe its where he flourishes I would happily listen to a record of tracks like this for hours on end! Unfortunately Beerbongs & Bentleys is yet to head in that direction.

Post Malone "Stoney" (2016)


I've only heard of Post Malone thanks to his friendship with the H3H3 duo, somehow missing the massive White Iverson single which has blown up to almost half a billion youtube views. That song alone encapsulates the records atmosphere which is obviously appealing for its mellow, relaxing and chilled out vibes. By using a lot of Hip Hop tropes and simple, stylistic oriented lyrics Malone hasn't been praised by the critical media however his massive success is testament to something unique he possesses that isn't heard elsewhere. Its not to say there is genius at work but clearly there are signs.

Two factors make their mark on this record, firstly Malone's laid back vocals swing between easy paced, straightforward yet slang soaked raps and tuneful R&B singing. Relying heavily on autotune inflections and double tracking, his voice finds a warm, inviting, painless place to operate from that's at many times rather spell binding in his ability to create an unwinding atmosphere to indulge in. Verses flow sweetly as words are stretched to the rhythm, often lyrically lack luster, simple rhymes for instinctive thoughts that occasional spark with a couple of cracking hooks like the chorus on "Congratulations", nothing you'll forget soon but that's no the fate of ninety percent of these words.

The second factor is production, mostly following the tropes of this Trap influenced era of Hip Hop, fast shuffling hi-hats and spacious kicks often dominate the percussive dimension and on some tracks they dive deeper into the disposable with "skrt skrt" shouts and jives. Its not particularly charming but its always smothered by the wash of dreamy synths and the melding of airy reverbs and sweep phasers coming from all angles to form a soft and serine setting that's mostly very persuasive. Its best moments come when the trendy beats are stripped back and other influences take form.

Songs like Go Flex with its acoustic guitar, soft strings, kick clap percussive and Up There with warm pianos and electric guitar licks, stand out as the deeper cuts. With elevated instrumentation not relying on trendy beats shows Malone's voice is a wonderful fit for something more ambitious. I can't rave about this record, it may be sweet, mellow and relaxing as it gets but a large portion of the lyrics are lacking and the instrumental qualities varies a lot. It does however have those moments that give a real sense of promise for Malone considering he wants to pursue his Pop and Country roots over this Hip Hop oriented sound.
